Entry Requirements/Student Suitability:
Business Studies requires students to express ideas clearly in data response and essay questions. They will also need to possess a degree of mathematical ability to tackle the finance area of the syllabus.  Students will therefore need to achieve grade 5/6 in Maths and English at GCSE if they intend to study the course.

Course Content:
A Level Business Studies examines the challenges faced by business in the UK today. It develops knowledge and understanding of the concepts underpinning modern business thinking.  It also promotes analytical thinking, problem solving and logical decision making.

  3. Decision making to improve marketing performance
  4. Decision making to improve operational performance
  5. Decision making to improve financial performance
  6. Decision making to improve human resource performance
  7. Analysing the strategic position of a business (A-level only)
  8. Choosing strategic direction (A-level only)
  9. Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies (A-level only)
  10. Managing strategic change (A-level only)

Methods of Study:

  • Discussing business case studies. 
  • Group work on presentations and debates.
  • Practical activities e.g. collecting video evidence.
  • Using web sites and newspapers to keep up to date with business issues.
  • Student review of business news headlines.
  • Practicing exam questions.

Independent Study Time:
A successful Business Studies student will have a curiosity about the business world. They will need to watch the news and business related TV programmes. As well as this they will need to complete practice exam questions and other specific homework tasks on a regular basis. These will be assessed regularly and allow us to monitor progress and feedback strategies for improvement to the students.

Progression and the Future:
A level Business Studies provides a platform for Higher Education and employment:
A degree/HND in Business or  related Employment, for example as a management trainee with a retail company or financial institution. Business Studies gives you a broad overview of how the commercial world operates; it covers the whole range of  functions to give a firm foundation which can be applied in any sector or industry
