Students who think they qualify for Free School Meals should apply for them, whether they want to take up the free meal offer or not. Free School Meals eligibility automatically qualifies a student for our Sixth Form Bursary and is also a measure used by many universities, both during the selection process, and also in relation to their bursaries and fee reduction programmes.

Do you qualify?

You can register your child for Free School Meals if you get any of these benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit ‘run-on’ – the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they cease to qualify for Working Tax Credit

Students can also register for Free School Meals if they are in receipt of any of these benefits themselves.

To check if you are eligible and to apply online, please use the free Eligibility Checker on the Cornwall Council website.

It is important to note that students who are eligible for Free School Meals also meet the eligibility criteria for the 16-19 Student Bursary.  Details of how to apply can be found on our 16-19 Student Bursary page.
